Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve never been a school bus driver and don’t have a CDL. Are there jobs available for me at METS?
Yes! School Bus Monitors (Bus Aides) assist drivers with student management and do not require a CDL. METS also provides training for safe drivers who want to obtain their CDL and become school bus drivers.
I have limited availability and can only work mornings or afternoons. Are there jobs for me at METS?
Yes. Substitute bus monitors and drivers help fill absences for those with limited availability. Flexible schedules with nights and weekends off make this a convenient option.
I’ve heard school bus drivers and monitors work part-time. Are there opportunities for more hours?
Yes. Many METS employees supplement their hours in other district roles, such as food service, custodial, maintenance, or classroom aides.
I have a medical marijuana card. Can I become a school bus driver as a cannabis user?
No. Federal regulations supersede state marijuana laws. CDL holders cannot use marijuana, even with a state-issued card. All CDL employees undergo pre-employment and random drug testing per FMCSA and DOT rules.
I have school-age children in my district. Would METS employment work for me?
Yes. Many parents enjoy that their METS schedule matches the school calendar. When students are on break or school is canceled, so are transportation employees’ schedules.
I only want to work locally. Will I be sent to districts all over the state?
No. METS employees are assigned primarily to a single district. Many prefer this, as they are familiar with the community. Relocation options are available if needed.
Does METS offer retirement savings options?
Yes. METS provides both traditional and Roth 401(k) options through John Hancock retirement services.
